The question that plagues every mother - what do we wear?!

Honestly, being comfortable forms 50% of my answer. If you or your little ones aren't comfortable in what you’re wearing, it’s going to bother you throughout our session and it’ll show on your face which will translate across your photos. But hey, I also get that these photos are an investment and it’s not something you have the luxury of doing regularly so it’s important to you to ‘get it right’.

Let me help you find the perfect balance of tones, textures and patterns to bring your portraits to life. Here’s a few tips:

clothing guide

  1. Choose coordinating colours, not matching. Let's leave the 90's in the 90's! No more sessions with the entire family in matching denim jeans and white shirts! By selecting a colour scheme and using hues that complement each other, you can achieve a more natural look across the board. Pick two main colours and then add softer tones, patterns and textures to accent and complete the look.

  2. Plan your outfits in advance. The more time you allow yourself to plan your outfits, the less stressed you’ll be.

  3. Consider your home decor. Since a few of these photos will most likely be hanging in your home and on display for a long time, make sure that the clothing you select blends in seamlessly with the colour scheme of your home.

  4. Try to limit distracting patterns and large logos. If little Penny threatens to chuck a wobbly if she can’t wear her garish Elsa outfit then see if you can use your power of persuasion by talking her down to an Elsa hair clip instead.

  5. As a rule, have more block colours/tones than patterns. Adding a pattern/floral element can bring it all together, as long as the tones are cohesive.

  6.  Avoid black and avoid having everyone in tones of blue and cream - it edits very cool looking. Bring in another pop of colour to balance it out.

  7.  Finally, lay each family member’s outfit together while planning. This will allow you a better idea of what works and what doesn’t. Please feel free to send this to me and I can help you decide.
